Welcome to another Life Catalyst Blog Post!
As you know, on my radio show I always talk about a particular meditation technique, which is called “Hong Sau” meditation.
So I thought it would be useful to post it here on the blog for your own use and reference. I hope you enjoy it.
Your comments are always appreciated!
Chapter 5 of the book: THE GOLDEN JEWEL
Now we come to the meditation technique. Through this technique you will strengthen your mind incredibly. The power of your concentration will consistently improve and you will gain the ability to hold your attention upon anything.
When your heart is directed toward God, you will hold Him in your consciousness so strongly that your divine Self will inevitably manifest. If you meditate with the aspiration to manifest your higher and divine Truth you will achieve the best results.
Love is a powerful key. If you feel great love for something (it could be anything: a person, your job, your ideals, your passions, etc…), and you meditate with the intention to reveal the highest Truth behind of that which you love, you will touch the divine source. The ray of that Love has manifested into the object of your love; you are tracing back to the source.
So, have a loving attitude as much as possible but, no matter what, meditate. You don’t need to have any idea of what is required or how it could be to trace back to the source. Just meditate and things will be revealed to you.
Now, after having said that, meditate without expectations! Just meditate to enjoy the process of getting in touch with yourself. No matter how much it can be scary at the beginning, it will eventually turn out to be a great experience, filled with joy and peace.
MEDITATION POSTURE
After having practiced the relaxation techniques, finally relax in the right posture for meditation. For such posture, two factors are essential:
1) The spine straight and
2) The muscles relaxed.
If you sit on a chair don’t lean on the back of it. Leave your spine free from any obstruction.
Sit with your spine straight, feet parallel on the floor. Relax your hands with your palms turned upwards at the junction between your thighs and abdomen. Shoulder blades almost touch as they are turned back while you gently open your heart and chest to the sky. Your chin is parallel to the floor.
You can also sit crossed legged if you like, but be sure that your body is comfortable so that its muscles can be completely relaxed, and you can keep the spine straight for all the length of the meditation.
THE TRIANGULAR BREATH
Now you are ready to practice some easy breathing technique. Here you will be asked to hold the breath at the point between the eyebrows. This is where your spiritual or single eye can be found. It is the ajna chakra, as it is called in yoga. When this eye is energized, spiritualized and open, you are in direct touch with higher guidance and wisdom. Through the Joy generated by conscious connection with the single eye, you can see and know the Truth upon the nature of anything as well as experience the higher you. This breathing exercise is called the “triangular breath”, as it is composed of three phases of equal duration. Inhale through the nose for 12 counts, hold the breath while focusing at the point between the eyebrows for 12 counts, and exhale through the nose counting 12. There is no holding of the breath when your lungs are empty. This will cause your whole system to have an increase of energy in the most relaxed way. Repeat from 6 to 12 times. Breathe in and out through the nose only. You can change the number of counts by making your breath shorter or longer according to your actual lungs capacity. This breathing technique is the first stage that teaches you how to direct all your energy towards the higher center of consciousness at will, physically located at the point between the eyebrows.
THE SWITCH
Now, inhale deeply through the nose and exhale through the mouth with a triple exhalation: “Ah-Ah- Ahhhh”. Similarly to the double breath, the first two exhalations are short and the last one is long and complete. This triple breath has a certain spiritual power and it works as a signal to start the meditation technique, it is a switch. After some time you will find yourself drawn naturally in a meditative mood after having performed this breath.
THE HONG SAU TECHNIQUE
Here is the actual meditation technique. Take these 3 steps to bring you to the full practice:
1- Bring gently your awareness at the point between the eyebrows with the next inhalation, and stay there as if you would want to penetrate this point deeply. Don’t try to control the breath anymore, just focus deeply at that point. As you do this, don’t strain your eyes or put an effort, but do it naturally. Your one-pointed concentration is a natural process. When you become sure about holding this point as if you would want to penetrate it, go on to step 2.
2- Start observing your breath coming in and out as it wants to. Don’t control the breath at all, but let it come in and out naturally while you observe it. When you are sure about the first two steps being active at the same time, proceed to step 3.
3- It is time to add sounds to your practice. When the breath comes naturally in, think mentally HONG (as in “song”) and when the breath goes naturally out think mentally SAU (as in “law”). The breath comes in and out on its own accord. Just think these sounds. Don’t do anything with your tongue, throat or jaw, they’re only mental sounds. This is what they mean: “I = Hong” and “He – Sau”. The repetition of this sounds can be translated like “I am He”, or “I offer myself into He”. He is intended to be God, your higher Self, your divine Being, or the highest Truth you can come in contact with.
By practicing this technique you will notice that, in time, the breath will become short and the pauses within one breath and the other will increase in length. When this happens, relax and enjoy those moments of freedom. Through this technique we are balancing all our system as we are consistently reducing the swinging between the two opposites of the scale. We come closer to the Point Zero, the point of perfect balance beyond duality. Breath is not life, but it is necessary to our physical body to bring oxygen to the blood. During this meditation technique we learn how to bring purifying energy to our physical system and shift our consciousness from the limitations of the body to the limitless Soul. Don’t force yourself into a state of non-breathing. It needs to come naturally as it is not a self-induced state, but a natural and divine way of living as pure being. Just relax and enjoy the technique.
Meditate as long as it remains a joyful process, try not to overcome the limit of what you can bear at the present time. If you are really comfortable in it, then you can meditate for a long time. Usually we all know our limits, we feel them. If you know that meditating even one minute longer will make you nervous, then stop before, right at the moment when it is still joyful. Start with short periods and let the length of your meditation increase naturally as your joy increases.
After you have meditated for some time (let’s say ten or fifteen minutes for the beginner), end the practice in the same way you started it: with the triple breath . Inhale deeply through the nose and exhale through the mouth: “Ah-Ah- Ahhhh”. Now, remain still without breath (with your lungs empty, also known as “empty chalice”) and focus your attention deeply at the point between the eyebrows for as long as you comfortably can. Repeat this process twice more (3 in total). It is important to hold your attention at the point between the eyebrows at this moment, so that your awareness can be lifted up there after the practice; the seat of your higher consciousness, true wisdom and great joy.
At this time you can forget about all techniques. Gently focus at the point between the eyebrows and relax completely. Remain in silence and enjoy the after- effects of meditation from five to ten minutes approximately. This moment, which comes right after the practice of the technique, is really important. After having prepared yourself through the meditation technique, this is when you can deeply experience divine Love, Peace and Joy. At this moment, your chance to enter a deep meditative experience is high, and you can find yourself absorbed in one of the eight aspects of God. Surrender yourself to this magical moment.
Not holding on to the after- effects of the practice is like cooking a delicious meal and then throw it away. Relax more and more in the Peace that comes after the technique.
This is also a right time to express your own love and offer it to God. Through the deep Calmness of your mind you can feel His response more easily. You can also ask questions upon something and receive the answers. Deep Calmness makes all answers possible to be heard. In this moment everything becomes clear and Wisdom manifests.
After having enjoyed the after- effects of meditation, it is the right time to send some positive prayer or thoughts to the world, to someone you love, to someone in need or to a difficult situation that requires to be turned into a positive experience. By sharing your blessings with others, you are blessed more and more.
Finally, come back to your daily life putting into action all that you have received through meditation. All the guidance and clarification that you now have can be knowingly applied in your everyday life. I have personally experienced that this is something that requires a lot of courage sometimes. Be courageous! You will see that you can bring positive changes in your life if you put into practice the suggestions that you have received in meditation.
